Exploding watermelons.

Food for thought:
It’s easy to forget
the weather that caused havoc for farmers across our land; cyclone Yasi, the droughts and floods
Customers concerned with the price of fruit and nit picking about imperfections.

If we think at all, imagine everything is back to normal for those affected.

ignore the distance our food has travelled
Oranges from California. Durian from Thailand
News of exploding watermelons in China.
Picture from here
If you’re struggling and poor, how tempting to hurry nature along!

Tampering backfires. Crops ruined.

Are our farmers here supported adequately
To enable them to be patient and let crops grow healthily?

All the rain we have gotten has put farm lands in lower Arkansas and other states under water.
I do have a veggie garden and wish now I had been more ambitious.

The same thing happened here last year with the floods. The real stories of the people are usually never told. Thanks for sharing this.

Arkansas Patti, Even the smallest veggie patch will help!

Daveenah, It's like there's some kind of amnesia, or maybe it's just too sad to think about.

Hi Sue .. love the drabble .. we're the opposite here = no rain .. dead trees in orchards and dusty wheat fields .. but the tennis season is here .. so it'll rain soon .. and the cricket test match against Sri Lanka starts tomorrow! bound to rain?! Cheers Hilary

Hilary, I hadn't realised you are suffering with lack of water. I've been known to wash my car in the hope that it brings on rain! The double attraction (?) of tennis AND cricket will be a tester for the rain gods - can they resist washing out those hallowed events? Hi to your mum from chilly Melbourne. Sue

Hi Sue .. in the SE corner - Sussex and Kent .. practically nothing .. and yes - there's 30% chance of some cricket today - it's in Wales though! Eastbourne tennis (pre Wimbledon) is now 2 1/2 weeks away ..? I'm not going to wash my car! Thanks - I'll do that for Mum later on .. just glad it's very light and not the winter! Cheers Hilary

Hilary it became extremely stressful when we were in drought. We realised a whole generation had grown up without enjoying splashing through puddles with gumboots on. Watching trees dying was hard, I didn't mind not having grass or lawn for years, but the trees really hurt. This year is the first time in 10 years the apple and lemon trees are flourishing without constant attention. I hope you get a good, steady, soaking rain soon.
